Noun – a gradual, steady increase in loudness or force. a musical passage characterized by such an increase.
“Crescendo” is an evocative three-dimensional artwork that captures the progressive build-up and intensity of sound through a meticulously arranged series of overlapping squares. This piece is part of a collection that explores the synaesthetic relationship between music and visual perception, illustrating how auditory experiences can manifest as vibrant colours and geometric forms in Hannah’s mind.
The artwork features a cascade of squares in varying shades of blue, teal, and white, each square layered to create a sense of depth and progression. The careful arrangement of these squares visually mirrors the musical concept of a crescendo, where sound gradually increases in intensity and complexity. As the viewer’s eye moves from one square to the next, the piece unfolds like a rising wave of sound.
The transition from lighter to darker shades of blue symbolises the emotional journey of a crescendo, moving from subtle, gentle tones to deep, resonant hues that convey a sense of fullness and completion. The inclusion of white squares represents the peaks of intensity and the moments of clarity within the musical build-up, adding a dynamic contrast to the composition.
